TheStarScoop.Com caught up with iCarly star Nathan Kress to put those pesky cancellation rumors to rest, find out what Nathan thinks about the Sam and Freddie and more.
THE STAR SCOOP:
iCarly is in the middle of its third season right now. Going forward, what should fans expect?
NATHAN KRESS:
Right now, we’re actually in a production break, so we’re not filming at the moment. We’re on a little bit of a break where we can focus on school and taking a breather. Last season we shot 45 episodes as our second season, which we basically counted as two. So right now, they’re airing what we’re calling our third season, even though when we were shooting it, it was still our second season. Actually, your guess is as good as mine what’s to expect in this upcoming season. I have no idea!
THE STAR SCOOP:
Are they doing a third season that you haven’t shot all the episodes for?
NATHAN KRESS:
Right. Right now, basically the end of the second season, which they’re calling the third season, has already been completed. We finished our last one in August. What is going to be on TV in the fourth season, has yet to be shot.
THE STAR SCOOP:
So there is going to be a fourth season. There was some buzz that the third would be the last…
NATHAN KRESS:
Yeah. There was this whole rumor. Right when I was coming back from the Nickelodeon cruise, I went online and found out that apparently there had been some juicy video about how I had revealed that iCarly was being cancelled and this was the last season. People blew this video out of proportion that I did for another magazine. And that was just people trying to start rumors and blow stuff out of proportion, and it was just a big misunderstanding. When I was talking about our last season, we were talking about our last season before hiatus. So people were misunderstanding what I was talking about, and then they took a step further and said that I said iCarly was cancelled, and I never used the word cancelled. Cancelled is a bad thing. It means that a show was not successful enough that the production company decided to cut it off prematurely. I never said it was cancelled!
THE STAR SCOOP:
iCarly can go on for…?
NATHAN KRESS:
Technically the sky’s the limit. We don’t know for sure when we’re going to stop. We don’t know how many episodes are left to go. That’s up to all the people in production and management at Nickelodeon.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Fans love Freddie so much, so of course they like you. How much of yourself is in Freddie?
NATHAN KRESS:
The further we get into the second, third, and eventually fourth season, you’re going to see a little bit of a melding of characters between me and Freddie. In the beginning, like in the first season, Freddie was a lot more spastic. He was on the trigger with Sam, and anytime she would say something to him, he’d freak out and started yelling and screaming and hurl insults back. I think he’s mellowed out a lot, which is a little bit more of who I am. I think we’re becoming more and more alike. Whether that’s me becoming more like Freddie or Freddie becoming more like me, I have yet to figure out.
THE STAR SCOOP:
When you started on iCarly, did you think it would become the big show it is?
NATHAN KRESS:
Honestly, I had no idea. We all had hopes. We all knew that it was a funny show. We were hoping that people were gonna like it. When we were first shooting it, there was really no way to know how people were going to react. The way that it worked was we started shooting in January of 2007, and the first episodes only came out in September of 2007. We were working all through the year on a show that we didn’t even know people were going to like. We had a hunch that people were going to enjoy it, and we were hoping, but there was really no way to know. Progressively as the fan following became bigger, and bigger, I think it was honestly beyond what any of us expected.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Freddie has been in love with Carly, but they’ve got a side thing going on with Sam. Do you have a preference for where they’ll take that?
NATHAN KRESS:
There’s honestly no way of knowing what’s going to happen. There’s episodes coming up where both sides of the relationship is explored. So far, they’ve already aired the episodes leaning toward Freddie and Sam. There’s going to be stuff going on both ways. Who knows what’s going to happen the fourth season. My unofficial guess is there’s going to be some kind of resolution somewhere towards the end. I have no preference, and I have no speculation as to how it’s going to turn out.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Do you have a of interesting fan run ins?
NATHAN KRESS:
I could just be walking down the street and someone says, hey, it’s Freddie! How do you know who I am? Wait, we did this TV show thing. It took a long time to get used to. I’m still not used to it. I hope I never do. The most interesting thing is the places where you end up getting recognized. A lot of the time it’s in the place you least expect it. If I’m walking through the grocery store getting milk for my mom, and then a parent is walking down the aisle and recognizes that Freddie guy from that TV show that their child watches? I would never have seen that coming, and yet it happens. It’s really cool to just see the different range of people who watch the show. I’ve seen two year olds come up but then I’ve also seen a 23 year old guy who says, dude we have dorm parties at my college where we just sit around and watch iCarly. It’s a huge demographic that the show reaches.
THE STAR SCOOP:
What message would you like to send to your fans?
NATHAN KRESS:
I just wish there was a way beyond some sort of social networking site that I could individually thank them for their support and everything. It’s amazing that people who I don’t even know can have my back. If I’m having a tough day, and I hop on Twitter and get a really nice comment from a fan, that just brightens my day. I just wish there was a way to show everybody my appreciation for all they do. I’ve got the best fans ever. I know everybody says that, but I’m pretty darn sure it’s true. When it comes to the show especially, they make the show what it is. If we had no fans, we would have no show. They’re a huge part of what we do.
THE STAR SCOOP:
What do you want to share with your fans?
NATHAN KRESS:
This whole Twitter thing has been invaluable just to be able to keep people updated with what’s going on. The website that I really hoped I would never have to get involved with has been a lifesaver when it comes to keeping people updated.
THE STAR SCOOP:

Twitter.com/bruindude92. I think somebody else has twitter.com/nathankress and I never really felt like trying to transfer over. I made my Twitter account without having the intention of ever having followers. I mostly did it just so that I could follow other people. I’m a big video gamer, so I was following that and that was basically my reason for making a Twitter at first. I never really though that it would evolve into this big thing. Bruindude92 was never supposed to be in use. Nobody ever really understands where it comes from. A lot of people think it’s from the Boston Bruins, which is apparently a hockey team, but I never really followed hockey. It’s actually the UCLA Bruins, which, in a perfect world, is where I’d love to go for college. My dad went there as well, so I have a little bit of UCLA heritage. It’s the UCLA Bruins, and that’s what I use for my username. It’s been interesting for people to try to figure out what exactly that means!
THE STAR SCOOP:
Is acting ultimately where you see yourself in the future?
Nathan Kress:
That’s what I would like to do as a career. When I go to college, I’m probably not going to choose to major in theater, drama, or anything like that, or anything really show business related. If eventually I do decide to get out and have kind of ended my run, I want to have something to go back on rather than just oh, I know drama but that’s basically it. So I would probably major in something general like business or communications. I definitely want to have my options open if I do decide to make a career change. The first option would be to stay in acting.
